A senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee said Tuesday that it is “appropriate” for the United States military to get more involved in the ongoing Syrian civil war now that it appears the government there used chemical weapons against its own people.

Sen. Bill Nelson said that there should be “moral outrage over the use of chemical weapons on innocent civilians in Syria.”

“At this point I believe it appropriate to take military action with NATO and our regional allies,” the Florida Democrat said. “Inaction would only lead to greater suffering and instability in the region and would further embolden” Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Secretary of State John F. Kerry said Monday that a chemical weapons attack on civilians in Syria was undeniable and news reports on Tuesday said that military strikes against Syria could begin as early as Thursday.
