Orlando, FL — The Orange County Democratic Executive Committee has elected Carlos Smith to lead the local Democratic Party as chair heading into the crucial 2014 election cycle. The OCDEC membership comprised of almost 140 eligible voting members chose Carlos Smith to replace outgoing chair and Orange County Tax Collector Scott Randolph who gave official notice of his intent to resign last month.

Carlos Smith, the current legislative aide to State Representative Joe Saunders and former aide to then Representative Scott Randolph, served as local party Communications Chair from 2011-2013. An alumnus of the University of Central Florida, Carlos gained political experience working on a number of Democratic races over many years and became the public policy fellow for Equality Florida in 2011 where he crafted legislative strategy with LGBT leaders. Mr. Smith offered the following statement:

“I am honored that Orange County Democrats have entrusted me to lead the party moving into 2014. A strong party will be critical in preserving the historic electoral gains local Democrats made in 2012 under Scott Randolph’s leadership. We will continue to focus on our core message of championing the middle class, expanding health care, growing our economy, investing in quality public education and reaching out to Orange County’s minority communities to appeal to voters, elect more Democrats and kick Rick Scott out of the Governor’s mansion in 2014.”
