State Rep. Scott Randolph, the Democrat running to replace a dead man, defeated Republican Jim Huckeba in the race to replace Orange County Tax Collector Earl K. Wood.
Randolph led 56 to 44 percent in his last-minute challenge to Huckeba, with nearly all precincts reporting. Randolph entered the race three weeks before Election Day. He replaced Wood, a longtime incumbent who died last month, too late to remove his name from the ballot.
In another highly watched race, underdog Republican Pete Clarke held about a 1 percentage point lead over Lui Damiani in the race for Orange County Commission District 3, with 87 percent of the precincts reporting.
