Democrat Karen Castor Dentel defeated Rep. Scott Plakon, R-Longwood, in a suburban district taking in parts of Orange and Seminole counties. Democrat Linda Stewart beat Republican Bob Brooks in a district around downtown Orlando. And Democrat Joe Saunders defeated Republican Marco Pena in an east Orange County seat.

A bright spot for the GOP: Last-minute Republican replacement Mike La Rosa appeared poised to defeat Democrat Eileen Game to hold on to an Osceola and Polk County-based seat that had was abandoned by disgraced Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee.

Republicans dominate the Florida Legislature, holding super majorities in the House and Senate that give the GOP almost total authority. But with the House wins around Orlando and elsewhere across the state, Democrats appeared likely to break the GOP’s super-majority in the House.
