Miguel “Mike” Nieves, a No Party Affiliation candidate who was on the ballot in Congressional District 9, has withdrawn from the race, saying he realized he couldn’t win and feared his presence on the ballot might tip the election to Republican Todd Long.

“I have contemplated my chances of winning in November,” Nieves said in a statement emailed to the media. “In doing so, two things are crystal clear.  1)  Our projections show I will not reach enough votes to win.  2)  I could swing the election in Mr. Long’s favor.

“Becoming the ‘Ralph Nader”’of the Latino community is not something I want to accomplish, so for me it becomes elementary that I withdraw my candidacy for Congress of the United States (Florida – District 9) effective immediately.”
