TALLAHASSEE — Florida Democratic hopes for gaining ground in the Legislature may turn on how well Maitland teacher Karen Castor Dentel fares in her challenge to incumbent Rep. Scott Plakon, R-Longwood, for the newly drawn House District 30 seat.

Dentel’s political bloodlines — a sister in Congress, a mother who was education commissioner and a U.S. Senate candidate – clearly helped her in the all-important chase for coin in her first quarter as a candidate.  Dentel reported Friday raising $53,482 since April, making her the biggest Democratic House fundraiser in Central Florida (sorry, Joe Saunders).  She also got another $11,165 in “in kind” assistance from the state Democratic Party, for staff and research.
