On May 16, a coalition of local groups announced an initiative to create a citywide standard for earned sick time for Orlando workers and businesses. I believe setting a standard for earning sick time is the right thing to do for our businesses and the city. And I should know: I’m a small business owner.

I own and operate Virgin Olive Market. We’ve been in business for five years and we have 11 employees. I’m proud to carry on the American tradition of local, independent small-business ownership, and I’d be proud to be part of a local business community that leads the way on an important issue like earned sick time.

There’s a strong business case for it, but at a deeper level, my support for earned sick time is about the values I hold as a local business owner. If you only listened to the business lobbies like theU.S. Chamber of Commerceor the National Restaurant Association, you’d think the only two things small businesses care about are cutting taxes and gutting regulations. But small business values run deeper than that.
