ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) –More than 7,000 petitions were delivered to the Florida Attorney General’s Office in Tallahassee on Thursday morning, urging Pam Bondi to stop the legal fight against same-sex marriage.

The delivery comes a week after a judge in Key West decided Florida’s ban on same sex marriage violates the U.S. Constitution.

His order was immediately put on hold because the Attorney General has appealed that ruling.

Members of Equality Florida are asking the Florida Attorney General to stop defending the state’s prohibition on
same-sex marriage.

They argue that defending the ban is a waste of taxpayer money and public opinion has shifted in favor of same sex marriage since voters put the ban in place in 2008.

Last week, Bondi told FOX 35 it is her job to “defend what voters passed” and that the issue should go back to the U.S. Supreme Court.
